Plano Asbestos Removal clears asbestos from kitchens and bathrooms in Plano before the remodel starts: sheet vinyl and its backing, floor tile and adhesive, textured walls and ceilings, and the finishes hidden behind cabinets. EPA names vinyl floor tiles, the backing on vinyl sheet flooring and flooring adhesives among possible asbestos materials, and there is no telling by eye whether a 1980s bathroom floor has any.

We work ahead of your remodeler, so the room is tested, cleared and documented before demolition. Kitchen and bathroom abatement is also available in McKinney and Addison.

What gets tested in a kitchen or bath

Sheet vinyl and tile floors

Remodels in Plano houses from the 1970s and 1980s can uncover an original sheet vinyl or tile floor under laminate, carpet or a later tile job. The inspector takes a sample from every buried floor the demolition will reach. EPA warns never to use a power stripper on flooring that may contain asbestos, so a positive floor is lifted by hand with wet methods instead of being ground off.

Tile adhesive and setting layers

The glue under resilient tile or sheet flooring, and the setting bed under ceramic tile, are separate materials from the finish on top, so a clean tile result does not clear the adhesive. Your remodeler needs to know whether the slab or subfloor will be left bare or with adhesive still on it, because grinding positive adhesive would put it in the air.

Walls and ceilings in wet rooms

Bathroom walls can carry texture and patches around old fixtures, and kitchen ceilings may have popcorn texture. These are tested with the floor so one survey covers the room. When the wall work goes beyond the kitchen or bath, see drywall and joint compound removal.

Cabinet and counter tear-outs

Pulling cabinets can expose flooring and wall finishes that the newer floor and paint never covered, and taking off a backsplash disturbs the wall behind it. The survey should include the areas behind and under the cabinets, so nothing new turns up halfway through the tear-out.

Fitting abatement into the remodel schedule

The order is survey, abatement, cleanup and inspection, then the remodeler. Booking the inspector while you are still collecting remodel bids keeps lab results from holding up demolition day. EPA advises sampling before a renovation that would disturb suspect material, and doing it early also means the bids can reflect what is actually in the room.

When abatement is done, the remodeler gets the lab report and a note of what was removed and what, if anything, stayed in place. That record is also worth keeping for the next owner or the next project in the house.

Frequently asked questions

Does my old bathroom tile have asbestos?

It might, and appearance will not tell you. A sample from each tile, adhesive or sheet layer the remodel will remove, analyzed by a qualified lab, is the only reliable way to know.

Can my remodeler pull the old floor?

Yes, if the floor and its adhesive test negative. If either tests positive, have it removed by a trained asbestos crew first, then let the remodeler start in a cleared room.

Does the Great Update Rebate cover asbestos removal?

Not as far as we can tell. The City of Plano program guidelines do not mention asbestos, and they set their own terms, among them an owner-occupied house at least 30 years old, at least $20,000 of improvements and no work before the city’s Notice-to-Proceed letter. Ask Plano Housing and Community Services before counting on it.

Textured ceilings in the bedrooms or living room are covered on our popcorn ceiling removal page, and the Plano Asbestos Removal homepage sums up each service.
