Plano Asbestos Removal removes asbestos drywall joint compound, tape and wall texture in Plano homes when a remodel opens walls, moves a doorway or takes a room back to the studs. EPA lists patching compounds used on walls among the materials that may contain asbestos, so the mud on the seams is tested along with the board before anything is cut.

Wall work in townhomes and rental houses is planned the same way. Our drywall and joint compound removal also reaches McKinney and Addison.

Wall work we handle

Opening walls for a remodel

Taking out the wall between a kitchen and family room, or reshaping a floor plan, disturbs every finish on that wall. Each wall the demolition will touch is sampled, and removal is finished before the framer or electrician arrives. You decide how far the abatement goes: only the walls coming down, or also the surfaces around them that will be patched.

Joint compound and tape seams

On a taped wall, the mud at seams, corners and screw heads is a separate material from the board, with the paper tape set inside it. Sanding positive compound is the step to avoid, since EPA warns against sanding, scraping or drilling asbestos material. If the seams test positive, the panels are cut out and bagged with the compound kept wet rather than sanded smooth for a new finish.

Textured and patched walls

Knockdown, orange-peel or hand-troweled texture, plus the patches from past repairs, sit on top of the board as layers of their own. A patch from a later repair can give a different result from the original wall around it. The inspector samples each distinct layer the work will disturb.

Small cut-outs for plumbing and wiring

A new outlet, a moved vent or a plumbing repair cuts only a small hole, but OSHA still counts repair and maintenance that disturbs asbestos material as regulated Class III work. Testing the wall first lets the trade go ahead normally if it is negative, or have the opening made under controls if it is positive. Several small openings can be planned as one visit.

Why the sample matters

Gypsum board, joint compound, tape and wall texture are different materials and can give different lab results. How samples are taken, and whether the layers are analyzed together or one by one, is a decision for the inspector and the lab, and the report should say which was done. Ask for a report that lists each sample location, so you know which walls are clear.

A clear result on one wall does not clear the whole house when other walls were finished at a different time or repaired later. Additions, a converted garage or a wall patched after a leak are worth their own samples.

Frequently asked questions

Is drywall itself asbestos?

The board can be tested on its own, but the joint compound, tape and texture on it matter just as much: EPA lists textured paint and patching compounds used on walls among possible asbestos materials. Test the board and its finishes before cutting.

Can I sand the walls if they test positive?

No. EPA advises against sanding, scraping or drilling holes in asbestos-containing material. A positive wall is removed or left undisturbed, not sanded down for a new finish.

Do I need a permit to open a wall in Plano?

That depends on what else the job involves, such as structural, electrical or plumbing changes, so ask City of Plano Building Inspections at 972-941-7140 before work starts. A permit and an asbestos test are separate questions: the city’s proof-of-survey step applies to commercial renovation permits, not to a single house.

If the same rooms have textured ceilings, see popcorn ceiling removal; for walls inside a full room remodel, see kitchen and bathroom remodels. All services are on the Plano Asbestos Removal homepage.
